Monamy, Peter
English Painter, 1681-1749
English painter. It seems likely that his family origins and name were French. The Painter-Stainers' Company records that he was apprenticed as a house painter to William Clarke from 1696, but by 1710 he had become a marine artist, filling the gap in the market left by the death of Willem van de Velde the younger in 1707. Most of his subsequent career was devoted to careful imitations of van de Velde's style (and, in some cases, of particular pictures), by which, according to Vertue, 'he distinguished himself and came into reputation'. He maintained his links with the Painter-Stainers, of which he had been made a freeman in 1703 Related Paintings of Monamy, Peter :. | The Privafteer Squadron, known as the Royal Family | The Capture of Louisbourg | A panoranma of the Bosporus at Constantinople the City spread along the European western shore, the Asian eastern shore guarded by Leander-s Tower | The taking of Porto Bello by Vice-Admiral Vernon on 22 November 1739 with six men-o-war only | Stern view of the first-rate Britannia | Related Artists: William HodgesEnglish Painter, 1744-1797
English painter. He first attended classes at William Shipley's Academy in the Strand, London, and from 1758 to 1765 was apprenticed to Richard Wilson (about whom he published a short biographical essay in 1790). Hodges followed Wilson's classical landscape style periodically throughout his career. Per EkstromSwedish, 1844-1935 John CollierEnglish Classicist Painter, 1850-1934
